Do you ever think about the fact that there was a whole world that existed before you were even born? Or that there will be an entire world that will keep spinning after you are gone? I look at this photo of my parents with my aunt years before I was born and I wonder what their lives were like. My life has never existed without these people and yet they had years, decades, without me. It makes me feel small, that my place in life is less fixed and central than I tend to think and yet I know I changed them completely. You have come into my life now like a sudden afternoon thunderstorm rolling in from the west and the world that existed before you seems far away. There are so many tiny lives existing on top of each other, most of them faceless to us, and yet just one person, your love, your child, your dearest friend, can make it seem like you weren’t even living at all, that your whole life can begin with one simple message.

Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won’t adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice. Instead of vowing to honor and obey, maybe we should swear to aid and abet. That would mean that security is out of the question. The words “make” and “stay” become inappropriate. My love for you has no strings attached. I love you for free.
